Evansville Police Officer Mike Jolly arrived at the scene, approached Barnett, and instructed him to not walk away, Barnett started to reach in his pocket, and Officer Jolly instructed him not to reach in his pockets and explained why he was there. Evansville Police Officers Brian Aker and Jacqueline Duff arrived at the scene, Barnett started to run, and the officers pursued him.
