The couple, who had been in a relationship for two years, resided together in a residence in Lafayette. Haynes suffered from stage four pancreatic cancer. She stayed in the rear bedroom of the residence while Canen stayed in the front bedroom. On March 16, 2022, Canen called 911 from the residence to report that his girlfriend, Mollie, had overdosed on heroin and was not breathing. Haynes, who was hospitalized due to her illness on or about March 14, 2022, was not in the residence at the time.
