Chanley struggled with substance abuse and used heroin and marijuana. The Davidsons suspected Chanley was using drugs after Chanley declined to seek medical attention for sores and swelling on her hands. Apart from her substance abuse issues, Chanley had no other health issues at the time of her death. On November 2, Chanley messaged Shalee Murdock, a friend she used drugs with in the past.
