That night, they returned to a home in Gary where they had obtained drugs earlier in the day. There were several people in the home that night using drugs, including Carter. Flores had previously been involved in a relationship with Carter. After the trio smoked cocaine together in a bedroom, Flores and Cottrell began to argue.
