Commissioners 5-19-26 [1:23-6:23]

We all stand with you for that. Ladies and gentlemen. Ladies to new flag of the United States of America. And to the Republic of New Zealand's one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. All over this meeting of the Lawrence County Commission for the May 19th of 2026. First on the agenda is approval of minutes for the May 4th meeting. Move to approve. Second. Have a motion. All in favor say aye. Aye. Next we go to approval of plans. I move to approve. That's presented. And a second. Have a motion. All in favor say aye. Aye. Next is approval of the payroll. Move to approve. A second. Have a motion. All in favor say aye. Aye. You know what's your point? It's Judge Nyper. Good morning, Mr. President, Commissioner Brandham, Commissioner Fiss, Mr. Smith. I'm here with an interesting request for the America 250. I'm a part of the committee here locally. We've come up with an idea to put an obelisk for the 250 on the courthouse lawn. You've got a rendering there by Tevin Norman with a blueprint as well. It's 20 feet tall, around 36,000 pounds. So it's a very substantial piece of limestone for our history obviously here in Lawrence County as well connected to the limestone. The drawings on the front that were created are just kind of the idea that he was thinking. He tells me you can make this very quickly. The stone came from my cousin's mine or query over in an olympic was donated. There would be no tax dollars used to do any of this will all be donations. I was supposed to be here two weeks ago for obvious reasons I couldn't be. I wanted to have this done for July 4th. McIntyre brothers has agreed to donate their services to Mount and set the obelisk. I would still like to try to do it for the July 4th. It may not happen. I don't know if I've got the energy to push it across the finish line just yet but I'm going to try. I'd like your approval to put this somewhere on the courthouse lawn. I don't really have any particular idea. I know Mr. Norman came up with that photograph and it shows it on the south side. It looks pretty. I was just sitting here with my wife thinking it would look nice right out here behind your windows. I was looking out as well. To my knowledge we've not had a major limestone monument set in Lawrence County for quite some time. I think the last one might have been the casibo down by the pool which would have been in the 90s. I believe the early 90s. Again this was what we were thinking for the American 250 celebration. We would do a dedication with the commissioners of course that morning of July 4th. We're supposed to. We're approved for a flyover. For the parade right before the parade. We've been told that that can change last minute with everything that's going on overseas. Obviously we understand that as well. So we would do the monument. Flyover and the parade would start through VRI. The other thing that we would like to do. In my wife and I we've purchased these. We will donate them. This is not accurate. The flags are much smaller but it gives you an idea. Line the roof of the courthouse with 20 different flags for the July 4th weekend. For the American 250. We would need some help maybe from some of the county highway department or somebody to help us mount those up there. I don't know that I can. I love getting on the roof of this old building but I don't know if I've got it in me to climb that ladder right now. That was one of the things we'd do. Of course there would be no tax dollars use. All of this would be donated. The concrete expense. My wife and I are going to donate. There are also some other individuals that are willing to step up and donate. So that's what we're seeking approval for is to put the flags up. I just looked at Nathan Watson and saw there is a flag that we've ordered we'd like to give the county from BRI. That will be an America 250 flag that is sized down.

{# E23 (Nick, ruling section 1 answer 10): quoting a bill or a court opinion works the way quoting a news article works. Select a passage above and the same panel opens: the passage goes to the official you choose, with this document's own address as its source and its own type. #}
