Learning how to memorize scripture in different ways [5:02-10:05]
We have like a scab in your hunt kind of finding pieces to the verses or throwing a ball around and then being able to kind of say a part of the verse and then move it onto the next person. So anything again, my boys just love doing that. But each one of them also, like one loves to draw, one loves to write, one loves to build a Lego. So it's kind of just, it gets a little bit of everything for them and another part of the flexibility too is just saying, hey, if there's something your family is going through this time, you don't need to go through this devotional from start to finish. You can kind of say, hey, we're dealing with this life situation right here. We've had something happen that's really difficult for our family or this is an emotion that I'm dealing with and just kind of say, let's go there and let's focus first on what's really applies to our family today. Yeah, well, and they're really practical, like you said, I mean, you've got doing chores and resting and dealing with anger or when things don't go our way. And you have a tailored for six and up. So you said your boys are a little bit older. Is there a way that parents can kind of tailor it, depending on the age, what would you recommend for that? Yeah, I think one of the best things is like my son now, my own, my oldest son can really kind of lead us through devotional. He can pick up the book and he can kind of read to us and kind of tell us what we're doing. So that's one way I always love to get older kids involved because my hope is that one day he's doing this with his family and the first time he does this shouldn't necessarily be when he has his own kids. He can do it now. And so, yeah, trying to do that and then just realizing that your, the memorization, it's probably actually going to be easier for the younger kids in your home than it is even for the older kids or the adults and I think obviously science backs it up. You like sponges that can take things in real quickly. So it's actually kind of a fun challenge for the older kids and the adults is like, can I still do this compared to the younger kids in your family who probably will get it quicker than anyway? Yeah. Okay. Well, give some, just go through really practically one of those ways for memorizing that you have in each of the sections because I know when you're in school and you're memorizing a speech or drama class and you're memorizing the script, a lot of these are familiar to me. And one of them I know is like, you take away the words and then you add, like, so could you just, like, write, speak directly to the listener, even an adult who's wanting to memorize scripture because it's important for all of us. Go through that. Yeah. Of course, memorization takes a lot of meditation. You kind of got to do both the same time. You can't really meditate on a verse without memorizing it because you're just rolling it over in your head over and over again. And so we try to do different things to get people to just say, hey, this kind of sticks with me in a different way than just kind of reading it and reciting it and reciting it, which is really what memorization is, but we can do it in a fun way. And so we've got some different things like a scavenger hunt where you can kind of go find the verses and then come back and put it together. And then you've got to figure out, oh, no, that's not where that goes. And so we're kind of all saying it together and really trying to figure out, as a family, how do we put this together and then be able to say it as a family. We've got different games where, again, you can kind of start the verse off and say, maybe three words and then you're going to pass the ball to somebody else and then they're going to say it. And so again, you're just trying to bring in multiple ways of memorizing the verse rather than just one way. And so my boys boys said, deck, can you help me memorize whether it was things in school or a wana when they were really young. And I said, yeah, we're just going to say it over and over again, but we can do it in a different way. It doesn't just have to be me reading it and reciting it. We can kind of do this together and have some fun with it, with taking things away, whether it's a whiteboard that you just kind of have somewhere or a piece of paper and making a song, because again, like you said, music sticks with us in a different way. And so encouraging families like, hey, make a song, take a normal tune that you've known before and kind of put the verse to it and then sing it to each other and kind of use that as your family worship song. Yeah, it's so good. I mean, it's a cannability when you're doing it as a family too, you know, you have to work together. One of the ones I liked from those extra, what do you call them, alternate? Yeah. Alternative memorization games is when you have buzz when there's a mistake, like you deliberately say one of the words wrong and then I can just imagine a family sitting around a table like, yeah, like just or Noah's machine or whatever, yeah, a lot of fun with it. Yeah. All right, lastly, if a family takes one truth away from this resource, what do you hope it is? That everyone can memorize and there is no time wasted when you memorize God's word. I think we oftentimes get in this mode of, we have to read a lot of the Bible to get something out of it. We could actually spend a lot of time in one verse, two verses, three verses and roll that over again, over and over in our head and our mind and our heart and that's really where a lot of the fruit that we'll see in a day comes from is like, I'm not going to remember everything I read in the morning, but I can remember that one verse that I memorized and kind of just see how the Lord will use that in that day or that week for your family. I like that it's not just a list of verses, two memorized and it's not just a regular family devotional. You really do take the time to make sure by the end of this section, you will have this first memorized. So, yeah, really, really poignant, really strategic, okay?
