Red Barn set for premiere

Michael Taylor is ready to see his play make its true premiere. Taylor, Red Barn Theatre’s artistic director, will direct “The German Tropics” June 10-14 and June 17-21 at Red Barn Theatre in Frankfort. Taylor “It’s the latest version of this script,” said Taylor, Frankfort High School’s director of theater. “I did it for the high school 10 or 11 years ago. We did a trial run of it, but since then it’s been back in the workshop, trying to scale it down so it can be done in a slightly smaller theater at a cheaper cost. It’s a very different show from when it was on its feet before. It is very new and people seeing this will be seeing it for the first time.” The original set had 11 entrances and exits and was two stories high, but the new version is scaled down. The play was previously called “Trouble in the Tropics.” Taylor said the plot centers on a young man who wants to go on vacation with his girlfriend. “He shouldn’t be dating her because she is the boss’ daughter, and the boss has a strict no-dating anyone at the office policy.” Taylor said the couple are going to the German Tropics resort on an island. The boss has a weekend business meeting at the same time. “Through mistaken identities, slamming doors and the usual farce fare, the craziness ensues,” Taylor said. “I’m very free with the actors. I like them to create the characters themselves. I always say the script is just words on the page, it’s up to them to bring them to life. What was done before is in the past, and I just want to erase that. I want to see this version brought to life.” Taylor plays Mike Talman in “Wait Until Dark,” which is set for June 24-28 and July 1-5 (except July 4). Associate Artistic Director Luke McLaughlin will direct that show. Taylor then returns to direct “Something Rotten,” the third and final play of the season, set for July 9-12 and July 15-19. “The comedies are definitely very silly and then we have the thriller in the middle,” Taylor said. “We’ve had some requests to do something that wasn’t just pure comedy, but in the end, you want to do what the majority of your audience wants. But you also don’t want to neglect that part of your audience that would like to see something new.” For more, visit redbarntheatre.net . Related posts: No related posts. Share. Tumblr
