And I'm going, okay, hope, well, now you're in charge of every single Mayo Clinic employee in the world. Wow. Wow. That's a big step up. Yeah. So, so, you know, I'm chatting with this person, of course. And you know, she's going, well, all right, hmm, let me, let me think about that, right? Let me think about the things I did. Okay, well, I did that 59 other times. One other quick story, she's actually was on the board with me of Habitat for Humanity in Pason, Arizona. And she was the former senior vice president for Victoria's Secret. Wow. And she, her name's Kathy Calcadise and she grew up in California wearing hand-me-down clothes from the grandma across the street. So how does, how did she get, you know, from that beginning, right, all the way to be, and she also was a vice president for Steve Jobs at Apple. That's highly impressive. Yeah, yeah. And, and so, you know, it's not like, again, I don't want to leave the impression that you've got to want to be the big dog or dog ass as the case may be, but there are things you can do. You're going to work for what, 40 years, maybe, four decades, probably, right? Yes. I think I might have had hair, I don't know, maybe when I first started, I'm not sure. Anyway, but, you know, you're going to work all the time, so let's make the most of it. Absolutely. And, you know, and even during that time, there are so many shifts that can happen or what I call pivots that one might need to make in a career. Even, and we had talked about teaching in education, that even within that, do you move to administration? Are you going to move at a grade level? I mean, that whole what I call pivot process, but in your book, the seven keys to a more satisfying future at work, one of the things and I think has to be understanding the players involved within the organization, whether it's a business or even a school, if you will, and how that whole dynamic works, what are some of your ideas or suggestions for having a better understanding in that? Okay, well, terrific question. I'll tell you, it's sort of as a catchphrase and perhaps a lot of your listeners already have heard this, but one of the things you want to be in at work is you want to be two things. You want to be a star where you are, and there are specific things in the book that can help you with that. But, let's start out with, you need to be, quote, in the promotion pool. Okay? So, if you can imagine in your head literally the corporate swimming pool, right, and all the people that are important are in that pool, and you need to be in there. And so, what happened, and it happened to me actually, I was doing really well in my department. I was in advertising and communications, but it was time for me to maybe move up to a director level. And that meant that vice presidents in other parts of the company needed to know who I was, and trust me, because now I'm going to be elevated, maybe, right, to be part and work with their senior people. And nobody knew me. Nobody knew me except in that one area, right? So, and the promotion pool thing, what happened in HR, human resources, was back in the 80s and 90s, it got to be where there was a team of people, not just your boss, that helped decide whether hope and Rick were going to move up in their organization, right? So, that's where this pool thing came from. And so, there are some things that you could do, and one of the things I did, and others did too, as well, maybe you need to volunteer for a committee. Maybe there's been a merger, or maybe it's for a charity, or there's some event going on that your company is sponsoring, maybe the food bank, or something like that. So, there's some things like that that you could get involved in that make sense. There's also, you know, reach out, you know, you probably have a coffee with your buddies that you know, well, what if you called somebody from a different department and said, hey, you know, talk to me and hope about what goes on in your life. What is it that we do in our department that affects you? Could we do something better, right? Or explain? Right, so there's two pieces, there's the networking piece, and then there's the learning piece, because if you want to go out there and really learn about what's, I mean, it's great. Let's say you are in a department-specific department, but in order to get ahead, you need to have
