Interim prosecutor sworn in in Cass County
Attorney Sarah E. Scoggin has been appointed as the interim prosecuting attorney for Cass County, a day after former Prosecutor Victor Fitz held a press conference blasting county commissioners for not doing more to retain the office’s staff.
Speaking during a ceremony to swear in Scoggin on Thursday, Circuit Court Judge Mark A. Herman said the criminal justice system in Cass County will continue to function.
“
I
think
a
lot
of
scare
tactics
have
been
going
around
about
how
the
county
is
going
to
be
basically
open
for
crime, a
nd
I
just
want
you
to
know
that
it
is
important
to
this
court
and
to
every
official
here
in
this
county
that
we
do
take
public
safety
seriously,” Herman said.
Scoggin has been a lifelong resident in Southwest Michigan, spending her professional legal career primarily in Cass County. She’s a graduate of Buchanan High School, Western Michigan University, and the Michigan State University College of Law. For the past 13 years, Scoggin has managed her own law office in Cass County.
The Cass County Prosecutor’s office says the interim appointment will provide continuity of prosecutorial functions, court operations, and public safety to allow Judge Herman time to make a prosecutor appointment for the balance of the previous prosecutor’s term.
Meanwhile, the position of prosecutor and multiple assistant prosecutor positions are now posted.
