Restored Supercross Footage: Hurricane Hannah and More [20:06-25:07]

models, Brock Glover in the center, a first and a third equal second overall, and Ricky Johnson, a fifth in the first model, a first in the second. There he is, Johnny O'Mara winning the 1985 San Diego Supercross Championship. Now it's two hours north on Interstate 5, the Anaheim Stadium, Anaheim, California, home of the California Angels and the Los Angeles Rams, and for the third year in a row, the Moto Hungry Residence of Orange County have turned out 70,000 strong, it is another sellout and this place is crazy before racing even begins, just to get warmed up, they start with a couple of rounds of the wave and watch out if you're sitting next to any drinkers when they throw their hands in there, just make sure they don't have their drinks in their hands. Can you imagine being in the pits? All you can hear is this screaming, the top Supercross stars in the world are there, most of Americans, Brock Glover, a former Supercross champion here at Anaheim Stadium, let's go to the pits and get his thoughts. I feel pretty good tonight, the track's into my liking and I have a lot of confidence coming in here, I've been practicing real hard so hopefully I'll be able to put one together and win this thing tonight. Any special things about the track you noticed earlier? No, I mean it's real narrow, it's kind of hard to pass, so I think the start's going to be very critical out there and other than that, I think it's just important to get a good start just to go, like I said, fast and can. How about the track? Anything particularly you notice it's going to give you trouble tonight? It's maybe a set of washboards, my legs aren't as long as I'd like them to be and it's kind of a disadvantage going through there, but let's not get going on to get warmed up and it doesn't really come to a factor, but other than that, everything else is really comfortable on. Last night I rained a whole lot, how did that affect the track? Not at all, really, they covered it with plastic, I believe, because it wasn't wet at all and it looks really good, it's really tacky right now, it's perfect condition. The rain earlier, Dave, you'd notice any problems with the track because it's sort of wet and muddy? We did a little bit slipper in the loop sections and one time you go through there and everything works fine, next time you get sideways, so it's going to be very important to keep a consistent line through the whole main event. How about your machinery, everything working up to par, anything you can tell us about your bike? It's fast, it's got a blue number plate. What about that little magic box that they're running on Honda's these days? Anything you say about that? Yeah, I got a walkman in there, I'm maybe listening to Cindy Lopper, plugging in my helmet during the first model. If you had a chance to win any supercross in the world, it might as well be Anaheim. 70,000 screaming fans can really drive you to a racing frenzy. Just ask any of these racers right now, Clint Hardock with a whole shot. Number 51 on the Honda in the lead and getting a little crazy there right behind him, Team Honda. Number 6, Ron Lachin. Well, she dives to the inside and passes Hardock through the place Eric Keon, the Suzuki. Around another turn and look at that flat pad. It's a tabletop jump, built out of truck trailers. Ron Lachin, 6 foot 155 pound from Elkhohon, riding for Team Honda, known as the machine Lachin. A great snow skier, a great water skier, and a phenomenal motocross racer. Down the back stretch. Here comes Lachin. We got to talk to Ron Lachin about his most coveted win. Well, I like that a lot of highlights in my career now. I think the biggest would have to be the trophy donations this year, and when we took the win and where were we? Drizzled Door, West Germany. Gale Door, West Germany, and when the Americans wanted, it was great being a part of the team. The feel of the bike being able to shift, it's coming more and more into play. They've finally peaked out with some great power, the machines, and the handling of bikes are superior. Now it's really coming down to rider skill and handling the bike. How do you handle your bike? Do you squeeze it? Do you... I do a little of everything to it. It's like a girl. I don't know. There's everybody who's got different riding styles. I've been riding for so long that it seems like it's just grown on me, and I never really worked on trying to have any kind of a style. So many hours of practice and stuff gave me my own, and it's all different. All the bikes are so close nowadays that there's a lot of little things that can make them or break the race for the riders. I think that's what most of it is now. A spectacular rider, Ron Lachine, 19 years old, in 83, he was rookie of the year in Supercross. 1984 was a great year for Lachine also. He was the 250 CC International US GP winner, second in the 250 Nationals, a 6th of the Grand Nationals, fifth of their own Supercross in 84. And a second at the Miller Masters Challenge, that was a $30,000 winner take all it was Brock Glover coming in first. And now, tonight, it's Ron Lachine's race, here in Heat Number One at Anaheim Stadium, all by himself, way out front. Back on the pack, it's number 1B, that's David Bailey.
