In October of 2020, Cook’s daughter was five years old and his son was seven years old (collectively “the Children”). Cook and Barton were in the process of divorcing at that time. [3] On the morning of October 2, 2020, Cook smoked marijuana, used Vicodin, and consumed methamphetamine before leaving his home for work. When Cook returned home, Barton communicated that she wanted him to buy Halloween costumes for the Children.
