There were many fatalities in building the board tree tunnel, so what they did was they started the cemetery at the top of the mountain for all the workers that passed during construction. Up the hill from the board tree tunnel is the board tree cemetery. It's a beautiful and quiet resting place that holds the untold story of the men who carved through this mountain. The tunnel bore actually goes right underneath the cemetery. When the tunnels construction began in 1851, workers faced dangerous grueling labor, blasting through rock with little more than black powder, hand tools, and sheer determination. Some never made it home. Many men died building the tunnel and they were buried here in simple unmarked graves. Their names may be lost but their legacy forever tied to the tunnel below.
