Letter: We should all be concerned about ICE

Editor, The most common misperception Carmel residents have about ICE is that, as Angela Brown said, “As long as you’re abiding by the rules and laws, you have nothing to be afraid of.” While this should be the case, it is simply not true. ICE is a danger to all of us — including law-abiding citizens and legal residents — because they arrest first and ask questions later. They do not require judicial warrants or probable cause to arrest someone, which means that absolutely everyone is at risk of being detained. And this should be cause for fear: getting detained, even for a few hours, could mean missing work and losing your job; leaving your children stranded at school or sports; having your fourth-grader come home to an inexplicably empty house; missing crucial doctors’ appointments or doses of medicines on which your life depends. None of this is hypothetical. These are all things that ICE has done and caused to happen to American citizens and legal residents who had not committed any crimes. Due process is a right guaranteed to Americans by the Constitution, but ICE’s policy of “arrest first, ask questions later,” functionally deprives all of us of that right. {# E23 (Nick, ruling section 1 answer 10): quoting a bill or a court opinion works the way quoting a news article works. Select a passage above and the same panel opens: the passage goes to the official you choose, with this document's own address as its source and its own type. #}
