2 Zionsville Town Council members advance in county primary elections

The Zionsville Town Council could look a little different next year. Council members Jason Plunkett and Craig Melton won their Republican primaries for county office May 5 as both knocked off an incumbent. Plunkett Plunkett, who is town council vice president, defeated Tim Beyer with 58% of the vote for District 1 Boone County Commissioner. He will face Democrat Bob Brennan in November. Plunkett did not immediately return a call from Current the evening of May 5. Melton will be the Republican representative for District 4 of the Boone County Council in November. He received 48% of the vote. Current District 4 representative Aaron Williams received 32% of the vote. William Dean (W.D.) Arnold was the other candidate. Winning the primary was a full-circle moment for Melton as one of his mentors when he entered politics was the late Steve Jacob , who represented District 4. “He was a great leader, and he kind of brought me under his wing,” Melton. Melton will face Javier Morell in the general election. He was unopposed in the primary. Melton Melton said he wants to emphasize responsible growth as Boone County continues to grow, which has been his focus on the town council. “Boone County is ready for the next level of leadership that has experience,” he said. District 3 County Councilor Kevin Van Horn easily won his GOP primary over Chris Litscher and James Davis. Van Horn received 62% of the vote. He will face Democrat Geoff Lee in the general election. District 2 will have a new representative as current office holder John Riner did not run for reelection. On the Republican side, Gretchen Smith defeated John Hume. Smith opponent in November will be Democrat Kevin Prather. In other GOP county races, Circuit Court Clerk Lisa Bruder defeated Yvonne Martinez. She will face Monica White in the November election. County Assessor Jennifer Lasley is poised for another term as she defeated Corina Papabathini. No Democrat filed for assessor. County voter turnout was at 18%.
