Dixon wins Hamilton County Sheriff primary

Hamilton County Sheriff Lieutenant Dustin Dixon has won the Republican Party nomination to become the next Hamilton County Sheriff during the May 5 primary election. According to unofficial results posted by the Hamilton County Elections Administrator, Dixon won 62.7 percent of the vote with 16,603 total votes. Opponent John Lowes won 37.2 percent with 9,861 total votes. “I want to thank, first of all, the folks that supported me and the men and women of law enforcement,” Dixon said at his Election Night Party in Noblesville at the Fraternal Order Of Police lodge at Morse Park . “We had several mayors and local leaders that supported me, so I’m very grateful and honored that they would do that.” There is no Democratic Party candidate running for the office. At the moment, Dixon will run uncontested in the November general election. Independent candidates have until July to run in the general election. Lowes conceded the election at 8:30 p.m. Lowes made the announcement from his Election Night party at the Motor District garage complex in Westfield. “The result didn’t come out the way we hoped,” Lowes said. “I want to give thanks to God. To all of you, my friends, supporters and everyone who believed in this campaign, thank you for your encouragement, your prayers and you dedication have meant more to me than I can ever express.” Dixon is in his 24th year of service with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. As a lieutenant, he oversees all aspects of day shift patrol operations, including animal control and probation security. “I’ve been here almost 25 years, but we’re at a very unique place right now with some growth and some challenges for the community and for the Sheriff’s Office,” Dixon said. “So I’m looking forward to tackling those head on and getting people motivated and moving forward all together.” Lowes, the chief deputy at HCSO, has more than 28 years of experience. Lowes oversees the daily operations of the HCSO and works with deputies and command staff to support public safety across the county. He has served in a wide range of roles, including patrol, investigations, field training and administration. “We tried to be understanding that one of us was going to go on and lead the agency and we didn’t want to hurt the agency,” said Lowes of the campaign. “I’ve always said that we’re moving forward with what’s best for the agency and the county, I want to be part of that. If that means I go back to a regular assignment, great. If I’m part of his administration, I would be open to that.” The Hamilton County Sheriff post was available when current sheriff Dennis Quakenbush was term-limited from running for the post again.
