Osborne earns Distinguished Hoosier honor
Meg Gates Osborne was in total disbelief.
She received the Distinguished Hoosier award April 24 at Hotel Carmichael through a proclamation by Gov. Mike Braun. The designation honors the Carmel resident’s civic and community contributions.
“I was flabbergasted and shocked, humbled and excited,” Osborne said. “As I looked around the room of family and friends, I felt there were so many who deserved this more than me, based on their contributions on so many fronts, so it was very humbling.”
Osborne, the granddaughter of Indiana Gov. Ralph F. Gates (1945-49), was a swimmer at Indiana University, graduating in 1982. While at IU, she was vice president of IU Student Foundation, which led to her becoming director of the IU Visitors Center her first year after graduation.
Osborne taught swimming for many years at several schools and programs, including a long stint as Heritage Christian School head boys and girls swimming coach.
Osborne helped create the 500 Festival Kids Day and served on the 500 Festival board of directors from 1989-1995.
Although she is most proud of her 42-year marriage to Brad Osborne, and her children Rob, Katie and Scott, she said the recognition is an accumulation of her life’s experiences, journeys and interests.
“For example, Brad and I founded Kids TRI for Kids Triathlon Series in 2008. This nonprofit has benefited over 8,000 kids throughout the Midwest,” she said. “As a swim coach and teacher, I am so grateful and proud of this accomplishment and the way it has reached so many kids and their families.”
Osborne started MEG & Associates, a media and event management firm, in 2008.
She also serves as the Carmel International Arts Festival executive director and has helped raise more than $30 million for schools, arts organizations and nonprofits throughout the state.
“Over the years, I’ve realized that every one of us can make a positive difference,” she said. “At any age and stage, set a goal that challenges you, create a plan; and when you get close, re-examine and set a new one.”
