State Sen. Mike Gaskill (R-Pendleton) made the following statement regarding the conclusion of the 2026 legislative session:
STATEHOUSE (Feb. 27, 2026) –"The 2026 legislative session has come to a close, and I am happy with what we have accomplished.
" Senate Republicans passed our priorities, includinglandmark welfare reformaimed at ending waste, fraud and abuse in the system. This bill would strengthen the integrity of our public safety net while enforcing a zero-tolerance policy for illegal immigrants applying for Medicaid and SNAP benefits.
"I am also pleased to see us pass legislation that wouldeliminate state taxes on tips and overtimeand a bill that would give our police the tools necessary tocombat illegal immigrationin our communities.
"As we move into the interim, I look forward to continuing to work on making Indiana an even better place to live, work and raise a family."

Earlier this year, our state suspended two of its gas taxes. As of Oct. 2, this has made Indiana's gas prices the lowest in the country. However, Indiana farmers and our agriculture industry are still suffering due to the skyrocketing cost of diesel fuel. As a farmer and the senator for a largely rural district, I am experiencing this firsthand.
One of the most basic and important duties of government is to keep us safe. And yet, Indiana is among the minority of states that still allows nearly all accused criminals to post bail, even if there is compelling evidence the defendant poses a significant threat to the public.
