Two running for Hendricks County Council District 2
Republicans Anthony Gary and Jay Puckett are running for the Hendricks County Council District 2 seat. Republican incumbent Lary Scott, the council president, is not running for reelection.
Gary and Puckett answered the following questions from Current.
Why are you running for this office?
Gary:
The next few years will establish a new normal for how county tax dollars are spent, and we must get it right. I’m running to ensure responsible stewardship and that the voices of the people in my district are truly heard as those decisions are made.
Puckett:
My belief in giving back to the community as a public servant. Hendricks County has given so much to me and my family. With 18 years’ previous experience on the County Council and 40-year background in finance, I understand budgeting and fiscal items related to the responsibilities of the Council.
What sets you apart from your opponent?
Gary:
I am the future of fiscally conservative leadership in Hendricks County.
As a business owner and father of three, I have skin in the game.
We’re raising a family here well into the 2040s, and my focus on responsible stewardship and listening will keep Hendricks County strong into the future.
Puckett:
Experience and previous collaborative leadership with Hendricks County elected officials and department heads.
What are your top three campaign issues?
Gary:
Listening to the people of my district, telling them the truth even when it’s difficult, and being mindful with their resources, because they’re their resources. Too many residents feel unheard. I will prioritize transparency, honest communication, and disciplined stewardship of the dollars families work hard to earn.
Puckett:
Responsible funding to navigate the following:
Public Safety, infrastructure and managing local units of government funding challenges due to Senate Enrolled Act 1.
What do you most want voters to know about you?
Gary:
My wife and I are grateful we chose Hendricks County nearly 10 years ago. I care too much about this community to sit on the sidelines while important decisions are made. This isn’t about titles or prestige; it’s about serving people and doing what’s right for our county.
Puckett
: Hendricks County has been home to my family for forty years. My “roots” are here and giving back to the community is part of my DNA. I am currently a member of the Brownsburg Fire Territory Merit Board, Brownsburg Rotary Club and was named Leader of the Year in 2014 by Leadership Hendricks County.
How will you ensure smart fiscal planning that accommodates rapid growth without sacrificing essential county services?
Gary:
Fiscal responsibility starts by questioning assumptions.
Growth shouldn’t automatically be accommodated at taxpayers’ expense.
Every opportunity must be evaluated on its own merits.
My focus will be disciplined budgeting, listening to our citizens, and protecting mindful necessities and services for the families who already call Hendricks County home.
Puckett:
That is a tough balance, taxpayers want low property taxes. In high growth counties this poses challenges based on how tax levies are calculated. People expect public safety and adequate infrastructure. We must prioritize the funding we have available and not affect taxpayers in a negative way.
