Welcome to The Film and Whiskey Podcast. We're each week we review a classic movie and a glass of whiskey. I'm Bob Book. How many times do you think we're going to do that this episode? Oh, at least 47. I still don't know how we didn't pair originally nectar or with a Denny Villeneuve movie. Well, I think this was this pairing happened before we ever got around to Denny Villeneuve. So maybe next time we can do it because we'll get into talking about our whiskey for the day, but they've released a new expression of this, Brad. It's a 16-year age-stated version now. Perhaps our next Denny Villeneuve film can be paired with Necta-D-E-D-E-D-E-D-E-D-E-D-E-D. But let me go back to my original prompt here. My name is Bob Book. Who are you? Oh, I'm Brad G. It's great to meet you, Bob. This week on Film and Whiskey we are looking at the 1994 Best Picture winner, Forest Gump, or as the guy dressed like Abbie Hoffman says in this movie. I've never noticed the way he says it before, but this time through I was like, what did he just say? What a great moment. I don't know just how to moderate the two poles of thought that I have on this. I've thought that I have on this film, Brad, because I really want to talk about the movie as a piece of cinema and evaluate it as a work of art. Talk about my issues with it. I also just want to sit here and quote forest gump for an hour because I'm sure I said this on our first episode. This was probably my most quoted film for a long, long time. I remember we were in college once and for some reason there was like, you know, we were on a retreat or something and there were like eight guys sleeping in bunk beds in this room. And two of us kept the other six up all night just saying forest gump quotes. It would get real quiet and people would start drifting and then somebody would go, her dream had come true. She was a folk singer. And then every moment started laughing again. There was just so many stupid quotes in this dumb movie, Brad. Yeah, I would put it up there with anchor man, the legend of Ron Burgundy, for like top most quotable films. Maybe we need to get back and do a top five bonus episode, Bob. Most quote of time, most quotable films. This falls into a really specific quoteable movie category, though, which is that the quotes when understood in context are not that great. It's only when you say them completely divorced from the context that the quotes are funny. Yeah, 100%. There are so many moments in this film where the script is so tight and keeps you moving through scene by scene. That you just get these little funny one liners that because Zemeckis is trying to get through such a large swath of history. Like he doesn't have time to linger on these scenes. And you get a lot of really funny one liners because of it. So Brad, our first time around, I had brought up that this is a really polarizing movie among critics. It was like, it was respected for what it was. But I think similarly to a movie like Green Book, like once it wins the Oscar, then everybody turns on it. And it becomes, I can't believe this movie won the Academy Award for a long, long time. We all liked it, but but now we don't. For a long time, this became reviled by critics. And so I think people are starting to come back around on it. But in a much more, I don't know, level headed sense, which is like, this is not a perfect film. It's good for what it is. We can debate if it won the Oscar or not. But I remember when I first brought this up to you, you know, in our first episode in season one on this. You were kind of surprised that this had been polarizing at all. And now having dealt with movie critics as much as we have, Brad. And also having reviewed what 300 movies or something like that at this point. I guess let's check back in on that debate. Can you see why critics would have been divided on this movie, whether or not you agree with that? I think that I can understand it when I look at particularly one other film in the best picture race. Pulp fiction is the obvious critic darling here. Like you're talking about Tarantino's big coming out party.
