PLYMOUTH, Ind. (WNDU) - Marshall County commissioners voted this week to permanently ban data centers across the county, marking the first permanent ban of its kind in Indiana.
Commissioners approved the ordinance Monday
. While other communities across Michiana have enacted temporary moratoriums on data center development, Marshall County’s permanent ban is unprecedented in the state.
“I hope we’re leading the way on this. As far as I know we are probably the most protected locality in all of Indiana,” said Jesse Bohannon, Marshall County commissioner.
Commissioners said the ban stems from several unknowns surrounding the impact on land, water, energy and other resources. According to commissioners, the majority of Marshall County residents support the ban.
“I would hate to be on the cutting edge, build these massive facilities and then for it to become obsolete,” Bohannon said. “We want to make sure the things we bring to Marshall county are tried and true, time tested and provide good return on investment for our people.”
Marshall County Commissioner President Stan Klotz said the decision prioritizes farmland protection.
“Success is protecting the public, protecting this county, the farmland and I think we’re halfway there. That’s basically what we’re doing, we want to keep Marshall County Marshall County,” Klotz said.
Both commissioners said they expect pushback from the state of Indiana but are confident the ordinance will stand.
The next Marshall County commissioners meeting is set for Monday, May 4, when regulations on solar farms are expected to be discussed.
