Two-person race in GOP primary for Boone County Council District 2

John Hume and Gretchen Smith are vying for the Republican nomination for the Boone County Council District 2 seat in the May 5 primary. Kevin Prather is unopposed on the Democratic side. Republican incumbent John Riner is not running for reelection. Smith answered the following questions from Current. Hume did not return Current’s request to answer the questions. Why are you running for this office? Smith Smith: I am invested in my community and the changes that affect Boone County. I have knowledge of state laws and mandates gained during a past experience as county auditor and my current position working with auditors throughout the state that helps make me feel confident in this position. What sets you apart from your opponent? Smith: My experience as a past auditor, a focus on budgeting and an in-depth understanding of Indiana local government sets me apart. As stated above, I have defined experience. I prepared budgets, dealt with changes in the law, balanced budget line items, processed bond payments, TIF, employee payroll, retirement and benefits. What are your top three campaign issues? Smith: My top three campaign issues are maintaining a balanced budget while keeping tax rates low. Continuously reviewing the impact of new state laws and mandates and keeping open communication and working together with all levels of government when dealing with upcoming challenges. What do you most want voters to know about you? Smith: Boone County is an important part of my life. I myself was raised here, I raised my children here and now my grandchildren are being raised here. I feel confident that my experience as a past auditor makes me highly knowledgeable in subject material that is important for this position. How will you navigate SEA 1 budget constraints while funding necessary infrastructure upgrades? Smith: We must explore alternative funding strategies for critical infrastructure, especially roads and bridges. Growth is straining the transportation system, so proactive planning and sustained investment are necessary to meet rising demand.
