Brunswick County commissioners approve budget for FY24-25

[transcript] Raising property taxes is a hot topic right now but leaders in the fastest growing county in the state say it's not a problem. Commissioners in Brunswick County approved the budget Monday night with no tax increase for property owners. WCT's Ava Brengord is breaking down the budget tonight. Now Ava, we covered Leland leaders having a very public battle over the budget there, not the case in Brunswick County though. Hey John, that's right. I sat down with one of Brunswick County commissioners today who say maintaining the current tax rate was his priority. The county is growing but the tax rate sure isn't. Brunswick County commissioners unanimously passing the nearly $400 million budget. I do believe that it's a good conservative budget. They say keeping the tax rate at 34 cents was crucial. The reason why the fast growing population. While I know people don't like the growth that's coming, the growth does increase the tax base and allows us to do things that we wouldn't otherwise be able to do without increasing the tax burden on the people who are already here. The surge has boosted its sales tax revenue by more than $2 million over what was expected. Commissioner Frank Williams says the other top priorities funding the public school system and boosting public safety. You don't feel safe in your own community. How can you raise your children there, run your business there or enjoy your life there and to me that's number one. Over $57 million is going towards Brunswick County schools while over a million is going to the Sheriff's Office to replace 21 cars. We're going to do the best we can to give them the resources they need. Williams believes the new budget is setting up the county for a successful year. Certainly there are going to be needs recurring every year as our county continues to grow. But I believe we did a good job of prioritizing needs as opposed to wants. This budget will go into effect on July 1st and for more information on how this budget is, could be spending your tax dollars, you can visit this story on our website. Ava Rengord, W-E-C-T News.
