Candidate: Jane Downard - Connersville News-Examiner
DOWNARD
Age:
Why are you seeking nomination as the Fayette County Recorder candidate?
I want to continue the preservation and digitization of older records. My plan would be to utilize in-house employees, and not contract out services, to get work done more efficiently and cost effectively.
What are the top three issues you see facing the Recorder’s office right now?
I want to commend the current recorder for her work in promoting programs like Property Watch and Equity Protect; these are vital tools for our residents.
When it comes to the digitization of records, I believe we should prioritize local workforce development over high-cost, out-of-state contracts. Our former recorder had acquired two scanners and was utilizing office employees to do the work, but after an existing part-time employee gave notice in early 2023, that position was left vacant for over a year.
By revitalizing our in-house scanning capabilities and ensuring our existing equipment is fully utilized, we can keep our money within the county and provide more hands-on oversight of our historical records.
I am committed to maximizing accessibility. Our residents, mortgage companies, and title searchers operate on busy schedules; ensuring our doors remain open through the lunch hour is a simple but significant way to show that our office works for the people, on their time.
How would you address these if elected?
I do not believe it is the best use of county funds to contract with outside companies for work that could be done by employing local citizens. I would attempt to keep the part-time positions full and work those employees the maximum hours allowed. I would also keep the office open through the lunch hour.
What is your background?
I have been the County Auditor since 2016. Prior to that, I worked over twenty years in management and accounting positions in the private sector.
Why should the people of Fayette County elect you?
I believe I have proven myself as Auditor, and I would bring the same work ethic, commitment, and fiscal responsibility to the Recorder’s office.
