Kourtney Maatman, who lived next door, was chatting in her yard with her friend, Nicole Graves. At some point, Graves got into her car and began to back out of Maatman’s driveway. Graves’s vehicle struck Maatman’s unleashed pit bull. Dawson, a veterinary technician, witnessed the incident, approached the scene, and began rendering first aid to the dog.
