Immediately after the stabbing, Payne called 911 and her neighbor, admitting in both calls that she had just killed her husband. When police officers arrived at the residence, Payne was wearing a blood-covered nightgown and smelled of alcohol. It was determined that Edward died of sharp force trauma to the chest from a stab wound to the heart.
