The Clay County Sheriff’s Office reported that a person of interest is in custody as investigators continue examining a fatal hit-and-run involving a pedestrian. Authorities said evidence collected at the scene indicates the suspect vehicle is believed to be a 2013–2018 Ford Focus.
The investigation began at approximately 7:10 a.m. on April 13, when a semitruck driver traveling on Interstate 35 reported seeing an individual lying on adjacent Edgar Petty Road, just north of NE 116th Street. Deputies arrived within four minutes and located a deceased man on the roadway. Preliminary findings suggested the individual had been struck by an unknown vehicle that left the scene.
Edgar Petty Road was closed for several hours while investigators processed the crash site and gathered evidence. The Platte County Sheriff’s Office assisted with mapping and documenting the scene.
Detectives are working to identify the victim. Authorities stated that once identification is confirmed, the next of kin will be notified before the individual’s name is released publicly.
Investigators indicated the vehicle involved in the crash likely sustained recent damage. Officials are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact the Clay County Sheriff’s Investigations Unit at 816-407-3728 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
