Ohio County Sheriff’s Office switches to private radio frequency after security issues - WFIE | 14 News

(WFIE) - The Sheriff’s Office is having to make some changes after some communication issues that interfered with deputies on the job. Ohio County Sheriff Adam Wright says someone had been accessing the frequency they use to communicate while on patrol, and interfered while deputies were chasing after an escaped inmate Sheriff Wright says they were working to capture an inmate who escaped on a transport, but the person interfering on their radio systems caused issues with deputies communicating with each other. Deputies had to switch to cell phones then private lines to communicate. “So that’s the only way of communications that we had was through our cell phones. Which is-- we could talk, but nobody else knew what was going on so they were still looking other places and so we were able to switch to our emergency digital channel and get everybody in that area so we can get this individual into custody,” Wright said. He says they’re still not sure yet who was interfering with the radio frequencies but do not believe it has anything to do with the inmate’s attempted escape. “The inmate was taken over at the last minute. It was-- the judge at the last minutes wanted to see this individual, so he didn’t know he had court. So we think what this may be is somebody has bought an old police portable and has somebody program it,” Wright said. He says that he understands that while public access to dispatch is important, they need to switch to the private frequency to keep the community and their officers safe. “We are aware that some people enjoy at home listening to the scanner and hearing what we’re doing. You know it’s-- and we like that. We want the people, this community to know what we’re doing. You know, we’re not trying to hide anything. Unfortunately this one person whoever it is and we’re still trying to figure that out, has ruined this for these-- everybody for the time being,” Wright said. Copyright 2026 WFIE.
