Add Us On Google Add as a preferred source on Google INDIANAPOLIS (WNDU) - Indiana Gov. Mike Braun is suspending the state’s sales tax on gas as prices continue to climb in the wake of the war with Iran. On Wednesday afternoon, Braun announced a gas tax holiday, which is a 30-day suspension of the 7% usage tax on fuel, effective immediately. According to state officials, the suspension could be extended if the emergency continues. “I am declaring a gas tax holiday to give Hoosiers relief from the pain at the pump from high gas prices. Affordability is my top priority,” Braun said in a statement. Braun called on gasoline retailers to deliver the gas tax relief directly to consumers. He said the state will be “patrolling the pumps” — monitoring prices to ensure that savings are delivered to Hoosiers at the pump. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita said his office will actively monitor fuel prices across the state to prevent price gouging and ensure drivers receive the full benefit of the relief following the temporary suspension of Indiana’s gas tax. According to our sister station WTHR , the tax was last suspended in 2000 for roughly three months by former Gov. Frank O’Bannon. South Bend officials thank governor South Bend Common Council members Dr. Oliver Davis and Sherry Bolden-Simpson wrote a letter to Braun thanking him for “taking this cost-saving action for the People of Indiana, including those of us who reside in the Great City of South Bend.” According to the letter, they had previously reached out to the governor on March 23 urging him to temporarily suspend the state’s gasoline tax. “Thank you so much for announcing today on April 8, 2026, a 30-day suspension of the 7% state sales tax on gasoline starting in April 2026 to combat rising fuel prices, which is estimated to save Hoosiers approximately 17 cents per gallon,” the letter said. “This tax holiday will provide immediate relief at the pump during these uncertain times in our world, which are impacting each of us at home here in Indiana.” Stay up to date on local news with WNDU on-air and online.
