At the Evansville Police Department, Pike spoke with Captain Andy Chandler as they both waited for Detective Keith Whitler, who was the primary detective assigned to the case. Captain Chandler later testified during a pretrial hearing he did not discuss the robbery with Pike, except to mention Morton’s name in passing to see how Pike would react. Next, Detective Whitler arrived and advised Pike of his rights under Miranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S.
