Child Abuse Prevention Month kicked off April 1 in Carroll and White counties with a luncheon and panel discussion focused on prevention efforts across the region.
Service organizations, agencies and local professionals gathered at YMCA Camp Tecumseh to advocate for children and families. The event was hosted by Carroll White CAP and the Family Health Center, with sponsorship from the Indiana Youth Institute.
Delphi Mayor Kamron Yates and Monticello Mayor Aaron Sims issued and read a joint proclamation declaring April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month in their communities. The proclamation noted that more than 213,938 reports were made to the Indiana Department of Child Services in 2025 and emphasized that child abuse and neglect affect every segment of the community.
“Whereas, prevention remains the best defense for our children and families. Now, therefore, I, Kamron Yates, Mayor of Delphi and I, Aaron W. Sims, Mayor of Monticello, do hereby proclaim April 2026 as, National Child Abuse Prevention Month in Delphi, Carroll County, Indiana and Monticello, White County, Indiana and urge all citizens to recognize this month by dedicating themselves to the task of improving the quality of life for all children and families,” Yates said reading the proclamation.

The document also highlighted the importance of prevention through community partnerships among child welfare professionals, educators, health providers, law enforcement and families, and stressed that children’s well-being is critical to the future of both counties.
Organizers thanked Camp Tecumseh for hosting, and panelists were recognized for contributing to the discussion.
Carroll White CAP officials said additional events are planned throughout April, which is also recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Scheduled events include:
April 18 — Get Out and Go Fest from 1 to 4 p.m. at Altherr Nature Park in Monticello, featuring resources, activities, giveaways and family-friendly events.
April 26 — Blue Sunday, when faith communities highlight child abuse prevention through prayer and information sharing.
April 30 — National Denim Day, encouraging participants to wear jeans in support of survivors of sexual assault.
Community members are encouraged to participate in events and support prevention efforts throughout the month.
