The two reconnected on the internet in the fall of 2020, by which point Drennin was divorced with two young children. Shortly thereafter, Drennin and her children moved into Whitman’s residence. After several months, Whitman’s behavior toward Drennin began to change, with Whitman becoming increasingly hostile and controlling.
