Joyce suffered from several medical complications and had a living will with a “do not resuscitate” order. Nevertheless, hospital staff briefly placed Joyce on a ventilator, allegedly with the family’s permission. Distraught that her mother’s wishes were not being followed, Gillette presented a copy of the living will to hospital staff the next day and urged them to follow its instructions.
