Dwindling patient numbers, however, caused significant losses in recent years. To turn things around, Franciscan decided in May 2021 to downsize the Hospital to eight beds and an emergency department. A group of Franciscan executives met with the City’s Mayor, Joseph McDermott, Jr., and his executive team the next month to discuss the downsizing plans. At the meeting, the Franciscan executives stated their intent to keep the Hospital’s emergency department open.
