State of Minnesota, Respondent, vs. Matthew Douglas Paulson, Appellant

── State of Minnesota, Respondent, vs. Matthew Douglas Paulson, Appellant ── Court: Supreme Court of Minnesota Date: June 11, 2025 Category: General Decision: Affirmed The statutory venue requirement set forth in Minnesota Statutes section 627.01 (2024), that “every criminal cause shall be tried in the county where the offense was committed,” is not an element of the offense, and therefore appellant’s factual basis was sufficient to satisfy the accuracy requirement of a valid guilty plea, even though the factual basis did not establish the statutory venue requirement. Affirmed.
