The award honors a person in an executive role whose work is influencing system and state-wide progress in mental health support. "Coming into office, almost eight years ago now, there's always more to do (with mental health support),” Goldsmith said. “Working from day one to where we are now, we've made significant strides." That includes increased access to mental health services each week for incarcerated people in the Tippecanoe County Jail. "When I came in, we had roughly 24 hours of mental health services,” Goldsmith explained. “Now we have 80." NAMI cites the jail's Integrated Reentry and Correctional Support program with peers as an impactful change. "People that have been incarcerated somewhere else before come into this environment, and work with us hand in hand to try to help those that are going to be released so that they don't come back," Goldsmith shared. The sheriff emphasized the need for these services in the Tippecanoe County Jail. "Unfortunately, the majority of people that are incarcerated do suffer from some type of mental illness,” Goldsmith said. “It's extremely important that we have those services, or at least something in place to assist them, while they're here and hopefully they continue that treatment." Goldsmith said community partners and the folks around him have made the advancements possible. "I'm proud of my team, and I'm proud of the community for allowing everyone to work together and keeping an open mind and communicating to get us to where we are today," he said. Sheriff Goldsmith said he's proud of the progress made with mental health services during his time here, but he's rooting for even more growth in the future.
