LAKE VILLAGE, Ind. (WNDU) - Indiana Gov. Mike Braun traveled to northwest Indiana on Thursday to survey damage and meet with first responders after
an EF-3 tornado moved through Newton County
on Tuesday night.
Officials said Lake Village took a “direct hit” from the tornado. The Newton County Coroner’s office identified the victims as 89-year-old Ed Kozlowski and his wife, 86-year-old Arlene Kozlowski, who appeared to have been killed by blunt force trauma
after their home was leveled
.
During his visit, Braun conducted an aerial survey of storm damage, met with emergency response personnel at the Lake Village Fire Department, and completed a ground survey to assess the impact on affected communities.
“We mourn the lives lost in these severe storms, and our prayers are with the Hoosiers whose homes, businesses, and communities have been damaged,” Braun said in a news release. “Today I thanked the first responders and emergency management teams who are working hard to keep Hoosiers safe and help them recover.”
According to the National Weather Service
, the tornado that hit Lake Village was associated with the same parent supercell that spawned
an EF-2 tornado in Starke County
and
an EF-1 tornado in Wheatfield
.
