INDIANAPOLIS (WNDU) - Indiana Gov. Mike Braun on Tuesday formally announced a $1 billion state investment in agricultural and life sciences, with a goal of creating 100,000 high-wage jobs over 10 years.
The investment is aimed at accelerating growth within the life sciences sector statewide, with a focus on increasing jobs and wages, according to a news release from Braun’s office.
The announcement, the release said, is intended to make Indiana the “premiere U.S. destination where human therapeutics, animal health, agritech, biotechnology and environmental innovation flow together along the vital, anchored pathway of private-sector excellence.”
The initiative is anchored by global companies including Eli Lilly and Company, Elanco Animal Health and Corteva Agriscience, alongside Roche, Novartis, Labcorp, Cook Medical, Beck’s Hybrids and Langham Logistics.
Braun said the state is already home to established companies in the life sciences space and is positioned to build on that foundation.
“So when we decided to put state support behind it, life scientist animal plants and human, we’re already the location for some iconic companies, Lilly, Quartaba, Land Co, Warsaw Indiana got a lot of medical device companies ZimmerBiomed,” Braun said. “So our whole state is already well positioned.”
Braun also pointed to the state’s universities — including Notre Dame, Purdue, Indiana University and Rose-Hulman — as resources for workforce development.
“When you look at the totality, the universities like from Notre Dame to Purdue to IU, Rose-Hulman, lots of schools, are a good place to train either through a degree and where we start weaving this into workforce development,” Braun said. “Because there is a lot of employers that may not need a college education. We just want to be the place that takes our current assets and develops it into something we can brand.”
