Braun ceremonially signs bill aimed to lower energy costs
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana Gov. Mike Braun on Monday held a ceremonial signing of
a new law
aimed at lowering energy costs and holding utilities accountable for Hoosiers.
The measure, signed into law Feb. 26 by the Republican governor, requires performance-based ratemaking, a multiple-year rate plan, and transparency when companies request rate increases.
The law also bans shutoffs from June 1 through Sept. 23, offering relief during the hottest months.
Following last week’s utility hearing, Braun praised the
Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission
(IURC) for prioritizing ratepayers but criticized utilities for defending high rates.
Under the new law,
Indiana Michigan Power
plans a new rate case to lower residential bills.
The IURC has started public listening sessions statewide, inviting people to share experiences to shape future decisions.
This story was written with a script that was aired on WISH-TV.
