Why Netflix's 'The Sandman' Failed. [39:12-41:29]

It's just another thing that makes Dream's fate feel less inevitable. If she'd been five minutes quicker, would she have saved him? In one of the stranger choices, the show takes the scenes with time and darkness from overture, a prequel mini-series that's not even part of the original run, and wedges them into the kindly ones. They aren't bad scenes, but they don't further the narrative, because why would they? They're not part of this story. And we've already talked about how Dream's death doesn't make sense for this version of the character, but more than that, his death was written as the conclusion of a seven-year run of comics, the culmination of an epic tale about a sprawling fantasy world. Those stories which aren't primarily about Dream are still about Dream's impact and influence, cutting them makes his world smaller. In the comic, his funeral is attended by everyone, not just the endless and all the characters from across the series, literally everyone, even you, the person reading this comic. Also Batman is there. The whole point is Dream's death is a universe-shattering event, but in the show, even though the Eulogies are mostly the same, it doesn't have the same impact in this small chapel attended only by close friends and family. When an adaptation cannot recreate the original as it was, now is the time to be creative. Invent a different way of saying the same thing, or say something else that's equally meaningful, because it's more faithful to create something new in the same way the original was created, then it is to just copy as much as you can. The show often feels like it's only been faithful to what it knows fans expect to see, a whistle-stop tour of the comics most memorable moments, but it doesn't always adapt what made these moments memorable in the first place. At best, these scenes feel hollow, gesturing at something that isn't really there. At worst, it winds up saying something completely different, and it doesn't seem to realise. So, does the show actually want to be faithful to the original? Either it's trying to be but failing, or it has a different goal.
