"I also want to send our best wishes to Congressman Jim Baird and his wife, who are recovering from a car accident,” Trump said on Tuesday morning during
his address to House GOP lawmakers
at the newly renamed Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.
“They are going to be OK, but they had a pretty bad accident and we’re praying that they get out of the hospital very quickly," he added. “He’s going to be fine. She’s going to be fine, but it was a bad accident.”
Baird's office also released a statement
, which was shared on social media, noting that the congressman's "vehicle was struck in an accident." The statement also noted that Baird is in the hospital and expected to make a full recovery.
“He is extraordinarily grateful for everyone’s prayers during this time,"
according to the statement
. "Congressman Baird looks forward to continuing his work on behalf of Hoosiers. The Office of Congressman Baird will continue to provide services and support for those who need it. Baird, who is 80 years old, represents the 4th Congressional District in west central Indiana. He was first elected to Congress in 2019.
News of the crash came as Republicans in D.C. mourn
the death of Republican Doug LaMalfa
, a seven-term U.S. representative from California. His death, along with the resignation of Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene, narrows the party’s control of the House to 218 seats to Democrats’ 213.
In 2022, Indiana U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski, a Republican, was killed in a head-on vehicle collision in her northern Indiana district. Two of her staffers traveling with her and the woman driving the other vehicle also died.
