Former D.O.J. Special Agent Steve Duncan describes David Barron and his Assassin [60:37-65:41]
And then once David died, he was protected by Gustavo Rivera, who was, you know, David's compadre and did him that favor. But, you know, those guys really never made it. Mexican Mafia really never made it in the Tijuana cartel, other than David Barone. And, and, and that just because he was David's buddy. Steve, we have three more questions. We're going to skip the questions. We're going to go to the last question. We've been on it for an hour. Literally, it feels like it's five minutes. Thank you once again, brother. I mean, this is a very, very interesting subject. You're the expert. But the last question is this. Tell us about David Barone's death and about the Blancornelas murderer with the attempt murder of Blancornelas. And tell us who Blancornelas was for our listeners or those that don't know, but tell us about his death. And that'll be the last question, Steve. You know, David, that's a long question. It's a long answer. And I recently, within the last year, wrote a story on 1997 because there were so many events that year. You know, Juan Cornelos was the editor of Zeta newspaper in Tijuana and I read it every day. They're very good. And in the late 1980s, his his Blancornelas partner, Hector got the Felix was was killed by somebody associated with Hank Rohn. And so every day, every week in his addition, he has a page dedicated to finding the murderers of his co editor, got the Felix. And so he and he saw the association with Hank Rohn, or he thought there was an association with Hank Rohn and the out in the Adianos. And so he would throw down the Adianos every chance he could. And so in his his weekly additions into this day, you know, they they basically front off the cartel people. They front off the government that's that's working with the cartel and that's allowed them to work. It's a bold and brave magazine. And recently in 1997, I wrote something for the editor there, Adele Navarro, about the events in 1997 that led up to the murder of Blancornelas. Because it takes a lot of explaining because, you know, during the year of 1997, a new general general chavez and a new major, Felipe Perez Cruz, were brought in to Tijuana as the head of the army to do the law enforcement functions there. And they wouldn't take the bribes of the Adianos. So they kept sending messages to these guys. You better take, or you're going to get killed. And so David finally killed the girlfriend of Felipe Perez Cruz. Her name was Elaine Wilcoscio. And she worked at an Italian restaurant in Tijuana. And so I think it was September of 1997 when David tried to send a message to the major. To knock it off, stop arresting their guys, and he assassinated his girlfriend in the restaurant during lunch hour. And so a week later, two weeks later, Felipe Perez Cruz, the major arrested David's combadre, Kitty Pies, at his sushi bowl, and got on the radio and taunted David saying, you know, basically fuck you David. I'm not going to give up. And so a few weeks later, David shoots two of the majors men in front of the courthouse that were driving the vehicle identical to the majors and shot two of his men. And so, you know, the major was pissed. Blancorn Alice got a whole of it called David, you know, an idiot. They can't shoot straight his band of Logan gang members. And so David took it personally and went after Blancorn Alice. And on Thanksgiving Day of 1997, ambush Blancorn Alice two vehicles, one stolen out of San Diego and one bought out of San Diego by the gentleman by the name of Ron Brill. That did a lot of favors for Gustavo Rivera and David Barone. And that's still out there to this day would armor their vehicles would would equip it. The police lights that would get vehicles used and homicides brought down to Tijuana. Well, he, Ron Brill did provide one of the vehicles that David was driving into kill Blancorn Alice and David, you know, the two vehicles out of San Diego. They were ambushed Blancorn Alice and both vehicles emptied and they were approaching Blancorn Alice's vehicle. It was a red suburban and just kept shooting shooting and shooting and then a fragmented round from one of the other vehicles, one of other Barone's vehicles basically fragmented and penetrated David's left die.
