There were no witnesses to the murder, and Gonzales’s body was never found. Therefore, many of the details of the murder were revealed only through Hallett’s detailed confessions. Hallett suspected Gonzales of stealing Hallett’s mail and believed Gonzales had conspired to have him evicted.
