When the officers arrived, they encountered Planck and found Isabel Hernandez on the ground with a gunshot wound to her chest. A sixteen-year-old girl, Z.W., was also present at Planck’s house at the time of the shooting. Hernandez died at the house while the police were still there. Planck told the police that Hernandez had broken into his house, that she had a gun, and that he shot her in self-defense.
