Archives & History Committee Interview of Judge Charles Randy Butler, Jr. on Aug [42:59-48:00]
one other thing I did, that went on, and I'll leave that pretty much out the video. The judicial conference had a long range plan permitting that will set up to plan in all range for what the court would expect, and I chaired that for a year in Washington, and I think the biggest event that probably ever happened to me, uh, want the Army to do the conference, I'll set the stage for you. We were in the gathering of the judicial conference, and Chief Justice Brent was in the middle table like this, and they're 11 circuits, so they're in a different zone, a different one, two, I guess, and we're all around the circle, and on two seats from Chief Justice Brent, Brent was, and the beginning was conducted, Jeff says things comes in, so I'm saying it's very competitive, but some remarks and comments, and Chief Justice Brent was, uh, a staff assistant walked in and whispered in his ear, and he kind of looked up, and then he'd go back here and sort of put very regimented guys with a, you know, kids going to meet, and then one of the other accomplishments, and he said, I've just heard that, uh, Jeff, that a, that a plenty has crashed in the moment in contact, and with all kind of fake comments, a shame, you know, from small to an innocent woman towered by accident. Well, not more than three or four minutes, and we're all sitting in the room, there's a courtyard out to one side, and that courtyard fence of the pentathlon, yeah, and we're sitting there, and we're all here at the same minute, and we're turned, everybody turns towards the courtyard, looking in the direction of the pentathlon, and what we heard, what the point is at the pentathlon, and, uh, remember Sally Ryder, Sally Ryder, from the rushing back in, and the Chief Justice gets the word, he looks up, and he says, the second plane is just hit the tower, we are evacuating the building immediately, and we're reconvening the final part of the morning, and he said, my assistant, what? I said, so we go pouring out from the Supreme Court building, and, you know, the plane, of course, they hit the towers with the representative business, they can prepare by, we'll represent the military, and they're not pretty sure that the third plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was for people that forced it down, was going to crash into, uh, Congress, into the capital building, because the center of the capital was in session, and it was, as we all rushed out on the street, the Supreme Court building was probably $150 behind the capital, so, what we might have witnessed would have been hilarious, um, as we go piling out on the street, if we're single person, and there are thousands coming out of every government building, have their cell phones up, and I had mine go send them, and, uh, we rushed down to the administrative office of Portland building, and there's a cell, to go down in the cell, and, of course, everything they received on the television, the heart broken, you know, what we see, and, uh, replay over, over, over, over again. So, uh, when we emerge, to go back to our hotel, if you've been to the Washington internet, what's the point of current station, right there, uh, you know, where the turnings all come together, but, uh, something, anyway, if you'd like to send a lesson, yeah, I don't know, it was packed, you know, it was packed to pay, it was everywhere, it's hard, we get merged with that around here, where the streets were taken, signs were shown by the White House a little bit, so I had to walk back to our hotel, and we go all the way back to our hotel, took about an hour and a half, and there no cars, there no flights, take that out, take that out of Washington, so while we're good friends with a judge on a different conference from another district, uh, who lived in West Virginia, so we drive out of, uh, to go through Georgetown, and it falls to Keybridge, and uh, straight towards the Pentagon, first of all clear gorgeous September day, and there's the giant billows, no control in the Pentagon, and as we hear, south from the industry, from West, from far away, you know, but here's where it's like eight planes, each way with that
