José A. Cabranes, U.S. Circuit Judge for the Second Circuit, Portrait Dedication [70:49-71:27]
Ceremonies marking the presentation of a portrait in universities as in courtrooms tend to elicit some old chestnuts, insights by notables. In academic circles, the quotable insights are preferably those of Dr. Samuel Johnson. It was Dr. Johnson who remarked on the apparent discrepancy between an epitaph carved on a certain gentleman's tombstone and the manner in which the gentleman had actually conducted his life. In lapidary inscriptions, Dr. Johnson famously observed a man is not under oath.
